Al Davis

memorial torch

The largest 3D-printed sculpture in the world, the design+build project integrates the talents our design, innovation lab, engineering, and marketing departments to create a world-record-breaking iconic element.

Commemorating the long-time franchise owner of the Las Vegas Raiders, the vision for the Al Davis Memorial Torch required an approach beyond traditional fabrication methods. With this challenge in mind, we proposed an unconventional idea: the torch, standing over nine stories tall, would become the world’s tallest 3D-printed structure.

225 3D-printed blocks made of carbon fiber, reinforced polycarbonate composite, each weighing approximately 350 lbs serve as the base structure of the hyperbolic ellipsoid. Polished at the base, across the top, 1,148 unique surface aluminum panels make up the reflective surface of the torch—each robotically painted for a custom finish and seamless reflectivity.

DI competed against a variety of design+build companies, but ultimately won through our unique storytelling and seeking out the most innovative methods to get the right structure & materials chosen for an incredibly complicated shape.
